In my experience, board members are engaged during the strategic planning process, If they think of it, then they will see that it gets done…with one condition, there must be an action plan with 1) Action Item; 2) Champion (Who gets it done); and 3) Action Date (start date, completion date, draft copy date, etc)
What are other ways you see to engage board members?
What have you tried and worked? and What didn’t work?

We certainly want to afford them an opportunity to take a lead role on an idea they came up with because they would be more willing to lead the charge! When looking to find board members, its important to understand what you want from them, what their skill sets are, and to define the role they play clearly. The more specific you are interms of time commitment and duties, the better. They do not want to take on an open-ended commitment without a plan of action and having an idea of how much time, talent, and treasure they are expected to give.
